The Aquinas Athletics Day is organised and run as a school-wide event at the start of Term 1. All students are expected to compete for their House in as many track and field events as they are capable of.

The first two or three U14, U16 and U19 placegetters in each event are then selected to represent Aquinas College at the BOP Secondary Schools Athletics Championships in Tauranga each February/March.

From the BOPSS event, the first two or three finishers progress to the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Athletics Championships.

The first Year 7 and 8 placegetters in each event are selected to represent Aquinas College at the Zone Athletics Champs in Term 4.

Based on performance at school and regional events, students can then choose to compete at the North Island Secondary Schools Championships at the end of Term 1, and the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships in December.

Training and practice for Athletics Day is primarily undertaken during PE lessons at school. Athletes wanting to compete at a high level are encouraged to join local Athletics clubs such as Greerton or Bellevue.
