Olympic Quest Takes Reece to Europe

A massive Aquinas cheer for Year 13 gymnast Reece Cobb as she takes on the world’s best in her bid to qualify for the Paris Olympics in July.

Reece is in the Northern Hemisphere competing in the Artistic Gymnastic World Cup series. She just finished 17th on beam and 31st in the floor routine of the Cairo World Cup, and competes in the Germany World Cup which starts today before heading to Baku, Azerbaijan in April.

Reece said she’s “pretty happy” with the beam result, noting the scores among competitors were tight.

The goal is to secure an Olympic spot by either earning enough points in the World Cup series or being the top-scoring NZ gymnast at May’s Oceania Championships. She then needs to gain NZ Olympic Committee selection to the Kiwi Team.

Last year, Reece placed second in Oceania, was NZ’s overall female gymnastic champion, NZ Gymnast of the Year, won a Māori sports award scholarship and competed in the World Championships in Belgium.

Aquinas let’s show Reece our support. No matter what result you get, your epic mahi is an inspiration to all. Huge AC pride!!
