The Bay of Plenty Zone Athletics were held last week at Papamoa Reserve. Aquinas College was represented by a good team of athletes who participated with great endeavour throughout the day. The standard of this meeting has certainly risen over the last few years and the talent, size and skill of many competitors needs to be seen to be believed.
This year it was the Yr. 7 contingent who led the way with several top three placings across a variety of events. Grace Kahle was our top performer winning the Yr. 7 Girls Discus. Caitlin Farrell ran well to gain a second and a third respectively in the 800 m and 300 m events, while Annie Nolan came 2nd in the Yr. 7 Girls shot put and 3rd in discus. Other athletes to excel were Sarah Edwards (2nd Yr. 7 1500 m), Brayden Stowers (3rd Yr. 7 1500 m) and Christopher Berger (3rd Yr. 7 long jump)
The battle for places at Year 8 was really intense, with the best performances going to Harrison McGregor who was runner up in the discus and Millie Quin (2nd 1500 m). Jordan Smith (3rd 300 m) was another who did us proud.
It was a tough day on the sprinting track and Aquinas College was unable to crack a top placing here, which flowed on through into the relays. Overall, our athletes impressed with their attitude and perseverance. A special thanks must go to Ms Dannaka Dorrington (Aquinas Sports Coordinator) and Mrs Susan van Zyl who managed and ran the team on the day.
