On Saturday April 10th two of our brass students were selected to participate in a masterclass with Shannon Pittaway, one of Australasia’s finest brass musicians/educators. Shannon is the Principal Bass Trombonist for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, a member of the Australian Brass Quintet, Head of Brass at the New Zealand School of Music. He has a massive wealth of knowledge and expertise!. As part of NZSO Setting Up Camp 2021 the orchestra was able to offer these opportunities to students coinciding with their tour itinerary.
Sylvester Green and Ned Shaw were both allocated 30 minutes with Shannon and the whole masterclass was open to the public audience. The students performed a piece of their choice and Shannon gave valuable tuition to each student.
Congratulations to all our Aquinas Big Band for their entry to the competition which took place prior to the Easter Jazz Festival in Tauranga. This was the first time Aquinas had entered this competition and we are proud to have been attained a Silver Award. Our performance was followed by a masterclass and helpful appraisals and coaching by the Judges Dr Rodger Fox and Eilish Wilson. This was a valuable experience for our musicians.
