Term Two has flown by with a number of our students taking up opportunities to extend themselves and represent Aquinas College.
The Tauranga Kids Literature Quiz for 2018 was held at Tauranga Intermediate. Congratulations to Chloe Davison, Dawn Villegas, Mia Knowles and Phoebe Watson – top scoring team in Round 1, 2, 3 and 8 coming out at 6th overall (28 teams).
One of the main learning focus areas this term has been writing. In Week 4 we had the pleasure of author Stu Duval joining with us for 4 days. Stu was an inspiration to our students as he shared his love of writing, music and storytelling. Over the week he worked with each year level as well as running some focus sessions for smaller groups.
From the science department we had two teams represent us at the EPro8 Challenge. The EPro8 Challenge is an engineering and problem solving race. Every year over 9000 students from 800 schools from throughout New Zealand take part. Our Year 8 team performed extremely well, and our Year 7 team made it through to the regional finals were they placed 5th on their second night of competition.
Our GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) students have been putting in some long hours as they work on their project to make a Rube Goldberg machine for the ‘Young Innovators Awards’. Thanks to Mrs Livingstone and the parents who helped by giving up several of their evenings and weekends to get the projects finished.
Student Portfolios
Student Portfolios are again being completed this year in Yrs. 7 and 8. These provide a comprehensive record of each student’s learning accompanied by teacher feedback. Portfolios help to provide students, parents, and teachers with the right sort of information to help set goals and improve the learning that is occurring both at school and at home. The portfolios will be sent home with students during week 10 of Term Two for parents to see.
We took a team of 28 runners to the Western Bay of Plenty Cross Country last week with the highlight being Izzy Jones who was 3rd in the Year 7 race. A total of 12 of our students qualified for the Bay of Plenty finals.
