Winter Tournament Update

WINTER TOURNAMENT: Updates from our roving sports correspondents…

Basketball:

Boys: Four convincing wins to start the tournament yesterday. Beat Mana College 89 – 69 then ACG 144-32 in a one-sided affair. This morning the boys triumphed over Stratford High School 170-40 and tonight play Hamilton Christian School.

Girls: A strong start with a straight-forward defeat of Taita College 88 – 35, then over Ruamata 73-36 last night. This morning they triumphed over TKKM o Te Kura Kokiri 94-70, and play again at 4.00 pm. Fantastic work AC basketball!

Netball: A character-building start for our girls in their A grade debut. (You may remember the excitement of last year – after being in C grade for ten-ish years, the team made B grade for 2023 – and then gained second place to be promoted into A grade – wahoo!) Stepping up to A grade is a pretty big ask for a mostly new and young AC team.

Two tough games against highly skilled opponents from the Tron yesterday – first Hamilton Girls and then St Pauls. Another tough one today against Carmel College. But a big shout-out to some ring-ins getting some awesome game time at a top level – India Scholes, Kaitlin Pola and Bella Wilson all stepping up! Kia kaha girls!

Football: The boys had a tough day yesterday. Although as good as their opponents, some dubious calls cost them. Lost the first game 0-2 (free kick and a penalty) and the second 0-1 (free kick). Plenty of chances but just couldn’t score. They’re not out of the running though, with two matches today and another tomorrow. Go boys!

AC athletes are competing all over the North Island in equestrian, basketball, football, netball and hockey. Go, Aquinas, we’re with you all the way!!
