Our Year 11 Te Reo Māori students spent time with kairaranga (master harakeke weaver) whaea Isobel Heke, (Tainui, Waikato) learning the art of flax weaving.
After completing the tipare (headbands) the girls were then shown how to make a Kono (a small woven bowl). Te Reo Māori Teacher, Matua Tu said the students were fully absorbed in learning the skills and gained valuable insight into the art of weaving. Following the session our students and teachers enjoyed making and sharing hangi kai later that day.
“These teaching and learning experiences are important for our students as it brings them closer to their ao Māori.”
