Yr. 12 student Izzy Northcroft was chosen to participate in an amazing youth development opportunity aboard Hinemoana.
Hinemoana is a traditional double-hulled Polynesian sailing canoe. Izzy was a crew member for 8 days with 12 other students and adults from across the BOP.
Izzy was selected from a number of students who applied for the Hawaiki Rising Voyaging Trust Scholarship package worth $1200 kindly donated by Jon Morrison the owner of PaknSave Tauriko.
The mission of the voyage is to facilitate the development of confident, resilient and integrated individuals who are connected to their rich culture and ancestry, our Maori and Pacific communities and our ancient and present reliance on the natural world. The Program aims to develop confident and resilient people who are connected to their environment, culture, community, whanau, and self-identity.
Izzy stated that this opportunity allowed her to build lifelong memories and friendships. She thrived on the opportunity to work together as a to crew to solve nautical problems, practiced sailing skills and learned about traditional sailing methods and histories on board Hinemoana. She particularly enjoyed communication and interpersonal activities while on board, swimming and diving as they visited local islands, isolated bays and inlets.
Aquinas College and Izzy in particular would like to thank Mr Jon Morrison for his kindness and support for this most amazing opportunity and we hope that another student will benefit from his generosity in 2019.
