NZSS Summer Tournament Week from Monday 22 – Friday 26 March.
National Volleyball Championships

Our Senior Girls Volleyball Team gave an awesome performance at Nationals in Palmerston North. Determination and focus were key as they faced strong servers and hitters from all round the country.  After pool play and cross over they finished strongly with a win after 5 sets putting them 9th in their division.

3 x 3 Basketball Championships

What an exciting time we had at the 3 x 3 Basketball Champs! To start the week off all three of our Aquinas College teams (Senior Boys, Senior Girls and Junior Girls) had a clean sweeps – three out of three wins each, with every team finishing pool play 1st or 2nd in their pools. After a monumental effort against schools far bigger and more experienced than ours, the teams finished with the final placings:

Senior Boys – 8th Open Senior Boys |  Senior Girls – 3rd Open Senior Girls  |  Junior Girls- 2nd Open Junior Girls

Maadi Cup 2021

This year’s national secondary school’s Maadi Cup Rowing Competition is being held on Lake Karapiro, where a record 2,458 athletes from 120 schools are taking to the water this week! On Sunday, the opening ceremony was a fantastic spectacle, and our athletes all agreed the atmosphere was electric! Congratulations Aquinas College rower Charlize Tutbury who, following this weeks Maadi Cup, has been selected to trial for the North Island U18 team which competes against the South Island at Lake Karapiro in the term holidays!

An excellent effort in a challenging field of students from all over the North Island.

Gillette Cup Cricket

At Jansen Park, Hamilton, the Northern Districts Secondary School’s Gillette Cup Cricket finals tournament, saw the top eight cricket teams from the region (north of Taupo – excluding Auckland) playing in the 50 over competition.

The first three games were challenging for our team with a loss by eight wickets to Tauranga Boys College, 179 runs to St Paul’s and 165 runs to St John’s. However, the boys won their final game against Whangarei Boys High by seven wickets. Captain Spencer Wills (84 not out) and Jordan Smith (60) produced a superb 142-run partnership to secure the win. A special mention to Cypress Purden-Winters, who reached his 75th appearance for the Aquinas College 1st XI in the game against Whangarei Boys. He only needs one more game for the 1st XI to become the team’s most capped player.

NZSS Open Water Swim

Five Aquinas Students competed in the NZ Secondary School Open Water Swim at the Blue Lake in Rotorua. The following students all completed the 3.5km Round the Lake race:

Nathan Holmberg finished 4th and Aidan Bollee finished 8th in the 12-13 year old males

Kate Dekker finished 9th and Zoe Wilkinson finished 12th in the 14-15 year old female division.

And Ivy Barret-Hodgson completed the 500m swim and was the 9th female finisher.

 North Island Secondary Schools Waterpolo

Our Senior Girls Waterpolo team have been playing Division 1 Water Polo in Wellington at North Island Secondary Schools. They had a very tough pool to contend with and had close losses to Baradene (6-9) and St Cuthberts B (7-8) along with a big loss against the strong Auckland Dio team (3-26). Cross over games have resulted in big wins against Wellington East Girls (22-1) and Hutt Valley High (23-3). The final game was a tough fought battle ultimately ending with our defeat. But the girls have another chance coming up in the holidays with the National Water Polo Championships. Huge thanks to Coach Gabe Orchard and assistant Tristan Edwards and manager Julie Simpson.

Taekwondo TUNZ North Island Invitational Champs

Josh and Jaz Oficial competed in the Taekwondo TUNZ North Island Invitational Championships in New Plymouth last Saturday. Together they won Gold in the Pairs poomsae (forms).
