On the 10th of April 20 students, four members of staff from Aquinas College, and Father Prakash participated in the annual Cross Walk, covering 18 kilometres on foot from St Thomas More to Aquinas in preparation for Holy Week. In pairs, we took it in turns to carry the cross making our way down Matapihi and through town to Saint Mary’s school then on to Aquinas College, stopping 14 times along the way to pray the Stations of the Cross.
For some people this was their second or third time making this solemn and meaningful journey but for me it was a new experience. It’s easy to go to church or to pray by yourself but being a witness to your faith in the wider community can be a bit more of a challenge. Although, while there were some stares, there were far more friendly car toots and in red square some even stopped to join in prayer with us. It was a unique and fantastic experience I’m humbled to have been a part of.
The Way of the Cross was followed by our Easter Liturgy, which re-enacted the Stations of the Cross, and was led by Year 13 students.
