We have had 40 students from year 8-13 take up the opportunity to join the fully funded Surf Sessions at the Mount. This is the first time we have participated in this initiative and the feedback from our students has been overwhelmingly positive. The 3 sessions on a Friday from 4-6pm were full of vibe and huge support toward one another. The instructors from Hibiscus Surf School were brilliant and commented on the quality of our students. All budding surfers caught great rides and got to experience what surfing offers – it is such a fun activity that has many elements of challenge, risk, reward, satisfaction, physical fitness, social, emotional and health benefits.
We will open this opportunity up again come spring time and hope that we can attract other students who could benefit from the mental health rewards that surfing brings. Over the winter we are hopeful that some hardy salty surfers will don on the thicker wetsuit and get out there for some winter waves. We are blessed to live in Tauranga Moana and have the ability to do activities like this. Ask your families or friends to take you out again if you liked it!
