Aquinas College celebrated a major milestone on Tuesday (April 29) with the official opening of the new Joy/Harikoa Block – a state-of-the-art building dedicated to visual arts, music, and drama. The development represents a significant investment in the future of the Arts at Aquinas.
Fr Arnold and Tamati Tata (Ngāti Ranginui Kaumātua) led the 8 am blessing before the gathering of Board members, staff, students, and guests explored the new space.
Principal Matt Dalton said the Joy Block will serve as a hub for creativity, inspiration and learning. “Our students are truly fortunate to enjoy such a vibrant space, and we are excited to see the opportunities that will flourish here in the years ahead.”
He said the block stands as a testament to the Aquinas Board’s vision, stewardship, and commitment to the future of our college.
Named after one of Aquinas College’s six Touchstones, the Joy Block is located next to the Prayer/Karakia Block. It features:
-
A fully equipped drama studio
-
Three art rooms and two dedicated art studios
-
A music room with four rehearsal spaces, including a recording studio
-
A general-purpose classroom
-
An outdoor amphitheatre area between the new block and the Gym
Construction began in late June, with the project brought to life thanks to the vision and hard work of many contributors. A heartfelt thank you to:
