Summer sporting codes are under way with Cricket, Volleyball, Rugby 7’s, Touch and Water polo all fielding teams in local competitions.
Cricket – A friendly round of games were organized with Bethlehem College on Tuesday 24 October between 1st XI, 2nd XI and Yr 7/8 teams . It is hoped this will become an annual exchange between the two Colleges.
Water polo – Year 7/8 Boys and Girls Water polo teams competed in the North Island Champs beginning on Thursday 25 October in Auckland. This will be followed by the Year 9/10 Boys and Girls Water polo teams who will compete at the North Island Champs next month. We wish our teams all the best at these tournaments. Congratulations go to Josef Schuler on his selection for the NZSS Boys Water polo team.
Volleyball – Junior A Girls Volleyball team will compete in the BOP Junior Volleyball Champs early next month. This will then lead to them competing at the North Island Secondary Schools Champs later in November.
Yachting – Congratulations to Max van de Zalm who competed in the Yachting NZ Youth Trials held in Auckland over the school holidays. Max was the overall champion of the Boys RS-X 8.5 Division which earn’t him selection to compete for New Zealand at the World Youth Sailing Champs to be held in China later this year.
Swimming – Lachlainn O’Connor competed at the NZ Short Course Swimming Champs and the NZ Surf Lifesaving Pool Champs in the school holidays. In the Swimming Champs competing in the 16yr age group, he placed 1st in 100 & 200m Butterfly and 3rd in 50m Butterfly and 200m Medley. In Surf Lifesaving he placed 1st in 100m Rescue Medley, 2nd 200m Obstacles, 50m Mannikin Carry and 200m Super Lifesaver, and 3rd in 100m Mannikin Carry all in the U’19 age group.
Basketball – Briarley Rogers has been selected for the NZ Women’s U’17 Basketball team which is currently competing in the FIBA Asian U’16 Championships in Bangalore, India. A top 4 placing in this tournament will qualify the team to compete at the 2018 FIBA U’17 Women’s World Cup to held in Belarus.
The annual Aquinas College Sport Prizegiving Awards will be held on Wednesday 1 November in the college Sports Center. It is open to all members of the school community and is a celebration of our students’ sporting performances throughout the year.
