Over the holidays we had many students achieving some great sporting results in Canoe Slalom, Swimming, Wrestling and Squash. Please do share with us your childs sporting achievements as we do not always hear about everything. Details and photos can be sent to ctarr@aquinas.school.nz.

Canoe Slalom – Jack Egan (Year 13)

Just an update on the competitions Jack was recently in. He had a fantastic NZ Secondary Schools and Nationals competition. He took out a haul of 7 trophies awarded solely and one joint trophy.

NZ Secondary Schools :                

  • Fastest C1 Man
  • Fastest K1 Man
  • Top Male – K1, C1 Dr Sprint combined trophy

He was also successful in the U18 C1 men and K1 Men’s (New Zealand) teams.

NZ National Championships

  • Fastest K1 Man
  • Fastest Junior K1 Man
  • Joint recipient Junior Men K1 and Dr Results
  • Fastest Junior C1 Man
  • NZ Rankings Awards – Winner Under 18 C1 Man

He was also successful in teams events winning First in the U18 C1 Men and K1 Mens (New Zealand) teams. Jack is now firmly entrenched in an intensive training programme for his upcoming tour in Europe. He heads away at the beginning of June initially to Pau, France to have a week’s training and acclimatisation and then fly into Krakow for the first of his races in the Krakau Mayor Cup – a world ranking event. He then heads to Augsburg Germany for an Under 18 European Cup and returning to Krakow for the Junior and Under 23 World Competition. Finally he ends his tour with a trip to Prague where he competes in the Prague  European Open and will then make his way back to NZ.

Swimming – Caitlin Farrell (Y9), Zoe Wilkinson (Y9), Ruby Helm (Y10), Thomas Wilkinson (Y11), Connor Farrell (Y12)

Congratulations to the five Aquinas athletes (Caitlin Farrell, Zoe Wilkinson, Ruby Helm, Thomas Wilkinson, Connor Farrell) who had made the qualifying time to race in the 2019 NZ National Age Group Championships during the first week of school holidays (16th April to 20th April 2019).

Congratulations to the podium medalists:

Caitlin Farrell

  • 200m Backstroke – Final 2nd place

Thomas Wilkinson 

  • 400m Freestyle – Final 3rd place
  • 200m Butterfly  – Final 2nd place
  • 400m Individual Medley- Final 2nd place
  • Relay Event : 400m Freestyle        – Timed Final 1st place
  • Relay Event : 400m Medley – Timed Final 2nd place

Connor Farrell

  • 200m Butterfly  – Final 2nd place

Wrestling – Blair Bromwich (Year 10)

Blair represented Aquinas College at the NZ Secondary Schools Wrestling Championships in Hawera on 6 April. There were 20 secondary schools represented by over 60 wrestlers.

Blair had a brilliant championship and won gold in his weight. Blair is now the NZ Secondary Schools Junior Boys Champ – 54kg.

Squash – Ella Hill (Year 8)

From Friday 26 – Sunday 28 April, Ella Hill competed in the AON NZ Junior Squash Open against players from all over NZ and Australia. Ella was seeded 7th in a sixteen draw in division two.

After winning her first three rounds she played off in the final. She ended the tournament runner up to Aucklander Justine Pauche.

Ella has also gained her C2 grading which is a phenomenal achievement for such a young player. We are looking forward to seeing who you progress over the next few years!
