Regional heats for the Smokefree Rockquest were held Saturday 16th of May at Baycourt. We spent a day immersed in amazing original music and performances. Only two acts from the competition’s solo/duo section and 12 band acts would move to the regional finals – making the competition very tough! My friend Gina Knowles and I performed in the solo/duo category with our original song ‘Mr Misunderstood’. We had written this piece as a tribute to Elton John.
It all became very real as we walked onto the stage, and we both sensed the adrenaline pumping through us as the nerves kicked into gear! Months of practice, preparation, and late nights of perfecting our songwriting came together finally in a three and a half minute performance. We both had an amazing time on stage sharing our music with other local musicians and the Rockquest team, as well as our friends and family and fellow Aquinas students who came to support us. We both can’t thank Mrs Cooney enough for all the support she offers us constantly, particularly during this competition. Neither of us would be where we are with our music and musical skills without her. Gina and I shared a sense of pride in what we had created together and can’t wait to get back onto the Rockquest stage again next year.
