Sadly, Maria Ngatai passed away on Friday 28th July 2017 after a long illness. Maria was the wife of Kihi Ngatai, our college Kaumatua, and was an important figure in the establishment of the College and our tikanga. Together Maria and Kihi campaigned the Hamilton Bishop and local iwi for the founding of our Catholic secondary school here in Tauranga.
Maria was a regular figure at school events as a number of her mokopuna attended Aquinas College. We will miss her dearly. Maria’s funeral was held on Monday 31st of July 2017 at Tutereinga Marae, Te Puna.
Maria was an absolute force to reckon with, a devout Catholic, a true believer in ‘You can do anything’ and she had one of the most beautiful smiles and warm embracing hugs. She was instrumental in the planning and building of Te Taumata Whare at Aquinas College and a great supporter of our Maori Catholic whanau.
Eternal rest grant to her O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.
