Over the weekend of 2nd -4th December a small group of students headed to Auckland to represent Aquinas at the NZ Secondary Schools Athletic Championships.
The level of competition was amazing and with such talent on display, it was always going to be tough for our team to shine. Nevertheless, each of our athletes gave of their very best.
Alice Williams was our best performer, running well in the gruelling Junior Girls 400m event. Though she could not quite make the finals, her effort in reaching the semi-final was meritorious. In the corresponding junior boys event,
Sam O’Connor ran really well but unfortunately was disqualified for running on the line. This was a very difficult way for Sam to bow out but he handled his disappointment with courage and dignity. Hannah McGregor performed exceptionally well for such a youngster in the U16 Shot Put and Discus, and although not making the top eight she managed a PB in the Shot.
Spencer Kirk performed creditably in the Para Shot and Discus but was up against some very big strong lads. Highlight for Spencer though was definitely having his photo snapped with a very illustrious Olympic gold medalist and World Champion.
Overall a great weekend and a big ups to all our athletes.
