National Recognition for Aquinas Mathematics Leader

We’re proudly shining the spotlight on Katy Thorne, Leader of Learning for the Aquinas College Mathematics Faculty, who has received a national honour for excellence in teaching.

Ms Thorne was recently presented with the Jim Campbell Award for Excellence in Teaching from the New Zealand Association of Mathematics Teachers (NZAMT) — a prestigious award bestowed on only four recipients every two years. The honour recognises her outstanding teaching, leadership, and wide-ranging contributions to the mathematics education community.

In addition to her role at Aquinas, Ms Thorne serves as President of the Bay of Plenty Mathematics Association (BOPMA), and is the branch co-chair of both the Post Primary Teachers’ Association (PPTA) and the PPTA Women’s Network.

Her leadership has had a transformative impact both locally and regionally. Last year, she revived the dormant BOPMA Maths Mini Conference, organised a BOP Scholarship Calculus Day, and her involvement in the Kāhui Ako initiative has significantly enhancing numeracy outcomes for Aquinas students.

We warmly congratulate Ms Thorne on this well-deserved national recognition — a testament to her dedication, innovation, and exceptional leadership in education.
