Two Aquinas swimmers delivered outstanding performances at the NZ Short Course Championships last month.
Year 9 swim star, Mackenzie Jury, is now one of NZ’s fastest female swimmers – at just 13 years of age.
She is NZ’s 21st-fastest female 400m individual medley (IM) swimmer after an incredible performance at the recent NZ Short Course Champs.
Having placed third in her age group, Mackenzie qualified for the open-age C final where she stormed home in first place (5:12.28), carving a massive 30 seconds off her PB despite competing against much older swimmers. The nation’s fastest 400m IM female swimmer is age 22.
Mackenzie is also climbing the rankings in the 200m butterfly. She is now NZ’s 26th fastest female after claiming silver in her age group then fifth in the open-age C grade final. She is the youngest NZ swimmer to go that fast.
The Year 9 student, who swims for Liz Van Welie Aquatics, also placed third in her age group’s 100m butterfly at the Auckland competition.
We’re also taking our hat off to Year 10’s Thomas Magill who set two new national records!
Swimming in the multi-class section, Thomas beat the NZ records he set last year in the men’s open age 800m freestyle S19 category and the U16 men’s 400m freestyle S19 category. Added to this, he was the second-fastest male of any age over 800m out of all the multi-class categories – despite competing against swimmers years older.
His 800m time was 10:16.73 time and for the 400m time of 4:58.33.
