June Careers Update
Tertiary Awareness Day
On 9th May Aquinas College took part in Tertiary Awareness Day, where the Universities, Polytechnics and Tertiary Providers are invited into the school. Each year 13 students chose 3 providers to visit and we held information sessions for students to attend to gain insight into each institution. These providers will return later this term and again at the end of the year to answer further questions the students may have.
On 19th May Mr Smith and Mrs Boniface took students over to the Waikato University Open Day. This was a very successful day for those who attended. Students learnt about courses offered and visited accommodation.
26th May Toi Oho-mai held their Open Day. We booked a few students into the ‘be a student for the day’ programme which is very beneficial for the students to experience tertiary education first hand.
These open days are beneficial in that they give the students a taste of what the campus life is like, lectures, halls of residence, what courses are offered etc
We are thrilled to be able to share that we have 18 students already active on the Gateway Programme for 2017. For those students who are in Years 11, 12 or 13 and do not have a clear picture of the vocational pathway they wish to follow, Gateway can be the answer. Also if you or someone you know are able to assist in this programme, we are looking for businesses to take in an Aquinas student for 8 – 10 days to give them work experience. This is a valuable tool for the Year 12 students looking at career options. There is no cost to the employer. It is a win win situation. If you are able to help please contact Mrs Consedine on wconsedine@aquinas.school.nz
Every Gateway Student has the opportunity to complete a Health and Safety Course, which prepares them very well for the work place. Students gain NCEA credits and employers seek students with this qualification. We have courses running on 8th, 9th and 15th June.
