Girls Hockey Team Through to Quarter Finals

The girls have secured their pool’s only quarter-final spot by defeating top-class opponents in a tough round dubbed the “pool of death.” They now face Samuel Marsden Collegiate at 1:50 pm today in what promises to be a thrilling quarter final.

In a series of outstanding performances, the team drew 2-all on Monday against Mahurangi College, Division 2 champs of the Auckland/North Harbour Intercity competition. They then rallied back with a last-minute penalty corner to defeat Cambridge High School 3-2. A fantastic win given that Cambridge played in the division above our girls in the recent Midlands competition.

Yesterday, AC played Takapuna Grammer, the North Harbour competition champs, to determine which team advances to the quarters. Down 1-3, the girls roared back to win 4-3 following goals from Teresa and Maria Tustin and Ariana Workman.

Coach Matt Dalton said the entire team has been playing exceptionally well against quality teams. Special mention to Kitty Finnimore, Ariana, Teresa and Maria who have been notable game-changers.

The team’s impressive form follows its 8-1 clobbering of Sacred Heart College last Wednesday to become champions of the Midlands Division 2 contest (photos of the match below). Ka mau te wehi – such amazing results girls!
