Level 3 Engineering students are making their mark – swelling in numbers and producing bigger projects than ever before.
Seventeen Y13 students are undertaking a CNC programming and operation project, which involves programming and operation of a CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) router in a design of their choice.
Upsizing his project, Sam Malone has engraved an 8cm thick oak benchtop for his Dad’s home bar. Nina de Lange engraved the Spotify computer code for her favourite song. And it works! Scan the code with a phone and the song starts playing. Other students have chosen to immortalise their own name on large planks. The finishing touches have seen the engravings painted black and the entire piece polished.
With projects like this, it’s little wonder the number of Level 3 Engineering students has grown. Next on the drawing board? Students will soon build a two-stroke air compressor engine from raw materials. They recently completed the CAD modelling of a wheel bearing and then 3D printing this to a working solution. Impressive stuff!
