The Campion Sports Exchange was a fabulous weekend full of sporting events hosted by Aquinas College. Campion College Year 9 and 10’s came up from Gisborne to compete in six different codes against some of Aquinas College’s best junior teams.
Campion arrived on midday Sunday 12 August and were greeted with a Powhiri at Aquinas College. After afternoon tea, we all boarded buses to head to the ASB Arena to compete in Basketball and Volleyball. Both games were dominated by Aquinas College, taking out convincing wins across both codes. Volleyball 3 – 0 and Basketball 83 – 15. After this the Campion College students departed with their host families for the night.
Arriving fresh and ready for competition on Monday morning, Campion and Aquinas students were rearing to go. Rugby kicked off first with Campion leading most of the way. Aquinas pulled together towards the end of the second half and bought it home with a 44 – 42 win. Netball and Football were also played at Aquinas College in the morning. Both teams displayed seamless team work and showed the AC Spirit humbly winning each of the games, Netball 17 – 34 and Football 0 – 5.
Across town at the Tauranga Hockey Centre, the battle of the turf took place. Campion put up a good fight but couldn’t keep Aquinas College away from the goal, finishing with a 6 – 0 win. It was brilliant to see so much comradery and bonding through both schools, with many of the students arriving as strangers and leaving as friends in little over 24 hours. Thank you kindly to all of our host families who fed and looked after their billets on Sunday night. The exchange would not be possible with you.
