We’re very fortunate to have some wonderful reader/writer volunteers who help out in our SENCO Learning Centre. Two of them, Linda Oxenham and Jean Bennett, are more than happy to give up a few hours a term to sit with students, read through questions or instructions to assist them in completing their studies in a wide range of subjects.
Jean explains that all that is required for the role is to provide a calm, quiet and relaxed environment without distractions for the learners to gain confidence and verbalise their answers. “There is no need for reader/writers to have a string of qualifications, simply a calmness to allow the student to interpret the question as we record their answers.” And it is very much a teacher/student relationship, especially when preparing and sitting exams. Theirs is a valuable resource and appreciated by student teachers and Learning Centre manager Hannah Hobbs. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Hanna firstname.lastname@example.org
