A great team of enthusiastic runners headed off to Waipuna Park for the BOPSS Cross Country Championships. Twenty-eight students competed against the very best that our region had to offer. All of the races were competitive affairs, with big fields and talent to burn. A very pleasing aspect was that Aquinas was represented by three-person teams in all but the senior girls race. In the U14 Girls and Boys races we had six-person teams as did the U16 Boys.
Highlight of the day was the superb performance of Tom McCarroll who out-sprinted Reece McCarthy to win the U14 Boys race. This one -two result certainly put Aquinas to the forefront. Other notable efforts came from Connor Farrell (5th U16 Boys) and Matthew McEldowney (U19 Boys) who battled hard throughout the gruelling 6km race.
The U14 Boys Team finished 3rd in both the 3 and 6 man events, the U14 Girls finished 3rd in the 6 man race whilst the U16 Boys finished 2nd in the 6 man race.
Overall a great day was had and several of the runners are now eyeing the Waikato/BOP Champs over in Hamilton in early June.
