AQUINAS COLLEGE ATHLETICS

Friday 19th February 2021 8.45 am – 3.15 pm Tauranga Domain, Cameron Road, Tauranga

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Friends and Supporters,

Welcome to the Aquinas College Athletics Championships for 2021. All students are expected to participate fully in five events. These are the 100m, High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put and Discus. All students rotate around these events throughout the day in their respective Age Groups. In the Field Events the Boys compete in one pit or circle and the Girls in another.

To assist you in tracking your sons and daughters’ whereabouts throughout the day please refer to the Programme (below) or download a copy here.

Please also read the information sheet which includes bus arrangements for the day, particularly if your child travels on the 808a bus. Athletics Day Important Information.

There are five Age Groups or competitions running throughout the day.

  • Y7 Boys and Y7 Girls
  • Y8 Boys and Y8 Girls
  • U14 Boys and U14 Girls
  • U16 Boys and U16 Girls
  • U19 Boys and U19 Girls

Please note that dates for the various Age Groups (U14, U16, U19) are taken from the 1st Jan 2021. For example, if a student is in Y9 and 13 years old on the 1st Jan 2021, the student will compete in the U14 age group. But a student in Y9 who is already 14 years old on 1st Jan 2021 will need to compete in the U16 Age Group.

All students receive House Points for participation and gain more points for performing better than their peers in the various events. The top-performing athletes in each of the Age Grades accumulate Championship Points throughout the day in each of the events in the race to become the Athletic Champion for their Age Division.

Championship Points: 1st =10, 2nd = 7, 3rd = 6, 4th =5 and 5th =4, 6th = 3, 7th =2 and 8th =1.

From our school Championships approximately 50-60 athletes (Y9-Y13) will be selected to represent Aquinas at the BOPSS Athletics Championship to be held on Tuesday 9th March at the Tauranga Domain. The Y7/Y8 Zone Championships are held in November.

Note: Longer races (200m,300m, 400m, 800m and 3000m) are held at school during lunchtimes, whilst the 1500m is held earlier on Friday morning 19th February at the Tauranga Domain. As well, a Triple Jump is also completed prior to the athletics day. A large number of students choose to run and compete in these events, to gain valuable Championship points as well as House Points.
