Atawhai mentors are year 12 students who are trained in basic counselling and mediation skills by Mrs Gilbert and Mr Syme to work with students who might be struggling with friends, home life, pressure or stress and could benefit from having a senior student at school to look out for them and talk with.
Atawhai mentors also provide wellness sports activities on a Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime in the gym for year 7 and 8 students. We know that students who are moving are more likely to feel ‘well’!
Atawhai mentors also wear the pink ‘no bullying in our school’ tee shirts and provide a roaming duty service on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday lunchtime, chatting to students and encouraging people to get off their phones, look up and chat to their mates and or play a game.
Last week the Atawhai team held a bake sale, making and selling sausage rolls and chocolate brownies to raise funds to provide several board games and activity items for Junior and Senior Aquinas students to assist with mental health and wellbeing issues.
