Aquinas Environment Committee Wants Your Recyclables!

Got items at home that can be recycled but can’t go in the kerbside bin? The Aquinas Environment Committee has you covered—and there are House points up for grabs!

For the rest of the year, the committee will collect specialist recyclables of Aquinas whānau to help reduce landfill waste and support local environmental efforts. Students can drop off eligible items to the collection point in Mr Webb’s classroom (Room 6) in the Whānau/Technology Block.

Led by Environment Committee Captain Beth Mosley, the team will transport the collected items to Envirohub on Glasgow Street, ensuring they’re responsibly recycled.

Why get involved?

  • Easy House points! Ten points to the House that brings in the most recyclables this year.

  • Support the planet by diverting hard-to-recycle items from landfill.

  • Help your family avoid trips to specialist recycling centres.

What Can You Bring?

Here’s the list of specialist recyclables being accepted:

  • Plastic lids (milk bottles etc; plastics #2 and #5)

  • Aluminum pull tabs

  • Nespresso and Nescafe Dolce Gusto pods (empty, clean, and dry!)

  • Steel screw jar lids

  • Colgate Oral Care products

  • All printer and toner ink cartridges

  • Batteries – AA, AAA, C, D, 6V, 9V Button Cell Batteries & handheld size batteries (sellotape the positive (+) end of the battery)

  • Fairy & Ambi Pur containers and packaging

  • Glad food storage bags and glad wrap (other soft plastics may be taken to community collection points)

  • Garnier Products  –  skincare tubes, bottles, caps, and face mask packaging

  • Electric cables & charging cords – these will be stripped down to their components for recycling through A&J Demolition

  • Laptops and devices under 10 years old with chargers. These will be refurbished and donated to the community by Recycle a Device.

  • Clean children’s clothing (up to age 12). Quality items are packaged up in Gear Boxes, which clothe a child for a whole year. Ripple sends these to various community partners including Women’s Refuge Rotorua, Auckland, Oranga Tamariki, Middelemore Hospital, and others. Not-so-great items are repaired, repurposed, or recycled into products such as RePack device sleeves.

  • Towels, sheets, t-shirts and denim. Any condition is fine as they will be stripped down to their raw materials by ImpacTex NZ.

This is an easy, impactful way to do good for both the planet and your House. Get sorting—and bring in those recyclables!
