Approximately 75 senior students journeyed 20km from St Thomas More School to Aquinas College on foot today for the school’s annual Cross Walk, stopping at various points along the way to pray the Stations of the Cross.
The three Discipleship classes of Year 11, 12 and 13 students participated in the April 11 pilgrimage from the Mount, across the Matapihi Bridge, through downtown Tauranga, stopping at St Mary’s Catholic School before returning to Aquinas via Cameron Road.
The day began with the praying of the first Station of the Cross with the staff and students of St Thomas More School. It was a particularly meaningful moment, as it marked the final Cross Walk connection for Principal Kath Joblin, who is retiring after many years of service to the St Thomas More community. We thank you, Kath, and wish you every blessing!
At St Mary’s, the group shared a Station of the Cross with junior students before enjoying morning tea and continuing on their way. Each Station offered students an opportunity to pray and meditate on Christ’s sacrifice for us. The pilgrimage concluded with the final Station beside the cross at Aquinas.
The day closed with our Holy Week Liturgy, commemorating the events of Good Friday – the day Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for the salvation of the world.
Our thanks to Father Eamon from the Parish of All Saints by the Sea for giving our students and teachers a blessing as they embarked on the Cross Walk. It was a truly special event for all those involved.
While the Aquinas Cross Walk is traditionally held on Holy Thursday, this year’s event took place on the last day of term, ahead of Palm Sunday, as Easter falls during the school holidays.
