On the 23rd of January, 14 students and four adults departed Aquinas College for the inaugural 1st XI Cricket trip to Melbourne.
The 7-day trip was the conclusion of around 12 months of planning and fundraising.
The tour involved four games of cricket against St Kevin’s College, Camberwell Grammar, Melbourne Grammar and Mentone Grammar school. Unfortunately, the third game against Melbourne Grammar was cancelled due to excessive heat.
The team played well. Despite losing each game they certainly were never outplayed. Upon reflection, some of the boys were a little overawed by some of the facilities and the occasion in some games. However, the learning from each of these matches should help the team as they prepare for the Gillette Cup competition in March.
Special mention must be made to the parents that went and looked after the team. Paul Wills, Fraser Lellman, Andrew Robinson and our professional coach Tom Piddington. Their vision and drive was superb and ensured we have made a number of connections which we can hopefully make use of in the future.
