Aquinas College Year 13 Economics students visited Oceana’s Waihi Gold and Silver mines. As part of the NCEA Economics course, they also look at market failure. Students were able to do this by analysing the positive and negative externalities of the mining, including dust, noise, water, explosion vibrations), and explored policies (solutions) to internalise these spill-over effects on third parties including nearby residents.
Students were able to witness a working mine in action and enjoyed a three-hour tour of both the open cut and underground mine network; and felt ‘rather wealthy’ holding a nugget of gold!
