Nail-biting Finish For Aquinas Boys’ Futsal
By Reporter Anika Wijesinghe
The Aquinas boys futsal team finished their AIMS campaign yesterday (Sept. 3) with an excitingly close game against Mount Maguinaui Intermediate. It was a match that kept the audience on the edge of their seats, with momentum swinging wildly until the final whistle.
The AC team showed good teamwork with strong passing and defence, but Mount got the win 3-1. The Aquinas goal was a well-earned moment — set up by a quick pass, finished with a confident shot that had the crowd cheering.
After the game, we interviewed Coach Darren Link:
How did you feel about the Game?
“I feel proud of everyone in my team. They never gave up and pushed through all the way till the end.”
How has your team improved over the season?
“Throughout the season, the team has really stepped up — working a lot on defence and building stronger support for each other.”
Who was the MVP of this game?
“Jesse Ryan (Year 7) for being an amazing goalkeeper.”
Aquinas Girls Water Polo Face Tough Challenge Against St Kentigern
By Reporter Daisy Kim
Yesterday (Sept. 3), the Aquinas girls water polo team dove into a match with the tournament’s second-ranked side, St Kentigern. Despite a spirited effort, the forceful St Kent’s attack proved too strong to contain, with Aquinas going down 14-1.
“We definitely did better than expected,” said AC player Abigail Crocker. “I just think we need to work on teamwork and stop playing in two separate groups all the time.”
Aquinas’ goal was scored by Year 7 student Mieka Sander, who was named MVP along with Zara Scholes (Year 7).
The match was part of the round-robin stage, where teams compete against six different opponents before moving on to the semi-finals and finals.
Editor’s Note: Last night, AC bounced back to score a resounding 12-1 victory over Mt Maunganui Intermediate, their final round-robin game.
