Our AIMS Reporters ventured into the hushed and somewhat tense atmosphere of the AIMS indoor bowling arena yesterday where they got these exclusive interviews with our four AC bowlers.
By Reporter Indie McKenzie (Year 7)
Becky Ryder, a student in Year 7 at Aquinas, totally crushed it in her game of bowls against Otumoetai! The final score was 6-1, with Becky coming out on top as the clear winner.
She had two super-tight games that had everyone on the edge of their seats, but Becky pulled through with some amazing skills.
The atmosphere was intense but quiet which made it feel calm. It was the perfect setting for such a peaceful sport. Becky said, “I highly recommend indoor bowls.”

Saoirse O’Connor (Year 8) played three games and won one, stating that her opponent was fairly easy and thought she had a good chance of winning.
Sadly, she did not make it into the semi-finals as she had to win three out of four games, but she still did amazingly well.
Saoirse said she would recommend bowls as it is an easy and fun game to play, you don’t need much skill, and you can play if you’re good or bad.

Our school entered four indoor bowlers this year, two Year 8s and two Year 7s. Only one of our students has competitively played indoor bowls before, Riley Hellund, who participated in AIMS last year. All of our athletes did incredibly well and did our Aquinas spirit proud.
An interview with Year 7 bowler Monty Parkinson:
Q: How did you feel about indoor bowls?
A: “Overall, I enjoyed it, but in my most recent game I got DESTROYED.”
Q: Would you recommend indoor bowls for others wanting to participate in AIMS?
A: “It really depends on what you like, but it is always a great backup option in case you don’t get into your first choice.”
Monty had just finished a tough game against a girl from Tauranga Intermediate, who beat him 20-3. He put up a good fight, and we wish our indoor bowlers good luck in their next matches!

Year 8’s Riley Hellund won two of the four games she played today (Monday, Sept. 9). She was especially happy with one and said her opponent was quite easy to beat.
Riley thought she did well overall, and is looking forward to playing doubles with Saoirse O’Connor.
She recommends bowls as a fun and fairly easy sport to try out and play.
