Revised Curriculum

The Ministry of Education has produced a Revised National Curriculum for adoption from 2008. This follows on enormous changes and full curriculum statements in seven key learning areas in the 1990s that led to enormous curriculum development and re-writing of schemes of work. Then we had NCEA introduced and again massive changes for teachers and students. The intent of the Revised curriculum is commendable - establishing five key competencies, eight key values and reduced outlines of what could be covered in each of eight Learning areas (now Languages has been separated into English and (other) Languages).

THE 5 KEY COMPETENCIES ARE:

1. MANAGING SELF
2. RELATING TO OTHERS
3. PARTICIPATING AND CONTRIBUTING
4. THINKING
5. USING LANGUAGE, SYMBOLS AND TEXTS

THE 8 KEY VALUES ARE:

EXCELLENCE by aiming high and persevering in the face of difficulties
DIVERSITY as found in our different cultures and heritages
COMMUNITY AND PARTICIPATION for the common good
RESPECT for themselves, for others and for human rights
EQUITY which means fairness and social justice
INTEGRITY which involves being honest, responsible and accountable and acting ethically.
CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT (the earth and its interrelated eco-systems)
INNOVATION, INQUIRY AND CURIOSITY by thinking creatively, critically and reflectively.
