Last Friday, the Special Character Committee leaders, Marion and I, as well as five other students went to St Peter’s Church in Cambridge to attend a meeting organised by the charity group Caritas Internationalis. We met with three of the other Catholic Colleges in our diocese to learn about what Caritas is, what it does and how we can spread their message in our communities.

Caritas Internationalis is a group of Catholic Charity Organisations. They have branches in 165 countries worldwide and over a million paid and unpaid volunteers. They respond to poverty and injustice throughout the world by providing disaster relief, food and medical supplies for those stricken by hunger and disease. They also run projects aimed to unite and strengthen local communities.

Relief workers range from helicopter pilots to food distributers and accountants. Although these people all deal with different aspects areas of the program they are all dedicated to making a difference in the world by helping those in need.

Throughout Lent, the Special Character Committee will be raising funds and running conscience raising events to support the Caritas branch in New Zealand. We all learned a lot about how we can support Caritas to help people in need and now we are asking you to be part of the movement. For more information of this amazing charity visit www.caritas.org or for Caritas New Zealand, go to www.caritas.org.nz . We look forward to having you support.
